Fabrication of silicon photonics with integrated III–V materials at scale.

Dr. Molly Piels article features in Laser Focus World.

Dr. Molly Piels, Principal Engineer and PIC Design Expert at OpenLight, is featured in Laser Focus World with her article, “Fabrication of silicon photonics with integrated III–V materials at scale.”

In the article, Dr. Piels explores how rising demand for high-bandwidth, energy-efficient optical interconnects—driven by AI-scale data center growth—is pushing the need for new photonic architectures.

She highlights OpenLight’s heterogeneous integration of III–V materials on silicon, which combines high-performance light sources, modulators, and other photonic components with the scalability of silicon photonics manufacturing. This approach enables higher-bandwidth optical interconnects while supporting volume production.

By addressing both performance and manufacturability, this technology helps overcome key bottlenecks in scaling optical connectivity for next-generation data center infrastructure.
