SemiWiki’s insightful ‘CEO Interview’ with Dr. Adam Carter, by Daniel Nenni, describes OpenLight’s unique technology and business model.

“We enable our customers to create Photonic ASICs (PASICs Photonic Application Specific Integrated Circuits) rather than optical subassemblies,” explains Adam. “We do not manufacture products, instead, we provide design assistance to customers who lack expertise in silicon photonics. Additionally, we license access to a Process Design Kit (PDK) for customers to create their own PASICs. The intellectual property (IP) required to do this now includes over 350 patents and growing.

“OpenLight’s platform enables companies to design and manufacture at scale, which is crucial as the industry faces increasing demand in markets such as data centers, AI/ML, and high-performance computing (HPC). Our technology also enhances the performance, scalability, and manufacturability of critical photonic components, including waveguides, splitters, modulators, and photodetectors.”

The article goes on to look at how OpenLight meets customer needs for reliability and scalability; the license-based business model giving open access to its PDK; the 800G solutions offered; and its expanding, 1.6T CWDM portfolio.
